Do you want to learn how to make money blogging in Nigeria? I remember searching on Google years ago for this very guide.
I didn’t make a dime from my first blog, and that was because I was on a free hosted domain.
According to my mindset then, I was chasing passion and not money.
There are numerous ways to make money blogging, like selling your unique product, affiliate marketing, through ad networks like Google AdSense, Media.net, and so many others.
My second blog was…!
Well, not so much when it comes to earning. But I didn’t slack, and I had to keep pushing.
My second blog was like a training ground, and it taught me almost everything I know today about blogging.
Making money blogging shouldn’t be a complicated task; it is something that just happens when you play your ball well.
Let’s face the fact, the majority of us start blogging to make money and head toward financial freedom.
Although it is a game of passion, what is passion if it doesn’t pay the bills?
I hear so many so-called gurus admonish new bloggers to pursue a passion and not money.
Although it is excellent advice, you need to put the money-making mechanism if you must make money through your passion.
What do I mean? You need to set the money-making machine, then fuel it with love for the niche.
My first paycheck from Google was mind-blowing. It pumped me up to keep blogging, to keep pushing even when it’s hard.
I was able to hit my $100 paycheck after six months of blogging, and it was the ideal motivation I needed at the moment.
Have you ever been in a situation where you are looking for a sign to either continue or quit? That was me years ago, hustling in the blogging industry.

- Frequently Asked Questions About How to Make Money Blogging
1. Choose A Lucrative Niche
Blogging is a billion-dollar industry, and there are innumerable bloggers banking thousands of dollars every day and living life.
Good news, you too can have a share of that delicious pie. But first, you must put in the work and pay the price.
I am terrific when it comes to following successful entrepreneurs and their success and failure stories.
When you analyze them, you will discover a unique pattern – they paid the price.
Don’t ever think you can start making thousands of dollars from your blog doing nothing.
If that was your mindset, you’ve got to let go at this moment. The key to making money blogging is to delve into a lucrative niche that deals with your passion.
Lucrative? I mean, a blog niche that at least has a target audience. To start a blog and succeed in this 2020, you have to let go of some old blogging techniques and models.
Before choosing a niche, consider the size of the market, and if they are convertible.
In the blogging industry, bloggers are spending thousands of bucks on hosting, email services, landing pages, WordPress themes, and so much more.
For Bloghomies, the goldmine is there and awaiting harvest.
There are numerous niches you can do and make money, and you must ensure that it aligns with your passion and expertise.
That way, you will be able to remain consistent and make money in the long run.
2. Upgrade Your Content
“Content Is King. “
Phew! I have heard that line for ages, and sometimes, I wish I can just punch these gurus that just can’t stop shouting it.
Irrespective of how painful and draining crafting good content is, it is one of the pillars that would ensure your success in blogging.
One of the mistakes I made as a blogger in the early days was not paying attention to my contents.
I was so lazy that my contents hardly reach 500 words count.
Over 90% of my post was mere 500 words, and it couldn’t compete with bloggers that fish out pillar posts daily.
To make money blogging in 2020, you need to focus on pillar posts.
Pillar posts are these enormous posts with valuable resources, charts, pictures, and videos that center on a specific topic, like this very article you’re reading.
Unfortunately, it’s hard to find Nigerian bloggers who create pillar posts. They are often of the notion that readers hate long articles, but they are wrong!
Every blog post is unique and demands that you pour out everything you know about that subject matter.
Not only what you know, but researched-based content that Google loves.
Here are the reasons why your blog posts suck.
- You’re writing what people don’t need or are searching for
- You lack a proven content framework
- You are still holding back from publishing the best content yet
Just like me, it is not your fault. Sometimes, we don’t know how lame our practices are, until someone more experienced points it out.
When it comes to writing a great blog post, blog post ideas aren’t enough. You must invest in that idea and make it the best blog post on the internet.
If there is a better blog post on that topic, make it a challenge, and write something more valuable and alluring. Remember, content is king.
Knowing what to write isn’t where the job ends, there are few other things you need to know, and they include:
- Discover popular contents in your niche and write about those topics
- You need to master a framework to make your blog post go viral, like list posts, how-to posts, etc.
- Deliver more than any blogger has ever delivered on that topic. Offer immense value, and you will gain your reader’s trust.
Phew! That looks pretty hard, right? I agree.
Like I said at the beginning of this post, we all have to pay the price for our dream. I feel like quoting Martin Luther King’s quote, but I will leave that for my next blog post.
The point is, it is hard. However, you can do it. All you need is to challenge and push yourself out of the comfort zone.
Before starting a blog, I had to perfect my skill in writing by writing for others. To be honest, I don’t regret it to this day.
To make money blogging, you need to be a badass writer.
You need to be able to captivate your readers and leave them drooling for more. It is an art that you can perfect with constant practice.
When I got my first computer seven years ago, I never thought I would be able to type so fast. The fact is, if someone had told me I would be able to type without looking at my screen, I wouldn’t believe it.
When I take a walk down memory lane and look at myself now, I can’t help but feel amazed. Not only can I type pretty fast, but I also do that effortlessly without looking at the screen or keyboard – the power of constant practice.
Whatever you do every time will embed itself in your subconscious mind, becoming a part of your being.
To make money blogging, endeavor to create content consistently, and make sure it’s resourceful.
3. Discover Your Traffic Playground
If you’ve been playing around with blogging. Then you already know the insane importance of traffic.
That is the pillar of success, the determiner of a winner, and the king of all who blogs. Traffic is what ensures your success in the blogosphere.
Traffic is a factor if you want to make money blogging.
That should always be ringing on your mind when you’re crafting content, or perhaps brainstorming about the next one-million-dollar idea.
There are numerous marketing and promotional strategies that you can implore to drive traffic to your blog.
Are they easy? Not at all. Can you achieve it? The answer is a resounding YES. But before you start pulling gazillions of traffic, you need to discover your playground first.
Years ago, Facebook was an incredible source of traffic generation to Nigerian bloggers.
In 2020, the game is different. Getting traffic via Facebook has become an impossible task. Unlike perhaps you already have a Facebook page with millions of fans.
My most successful blog got its traffic from organic search on Google. About 90% of traffic was from Google, and thus, I focused on this traffic source for better results.
In other words, Google became my traffic playground, and I was able to make thousands of dollars monthly.
As a beginner, you would probably find the subject of traffic daunting and confusing. I understand as I was once in that shoe.
Many bloggers get traffic only by:
- Leaving comments on related blogs
- Leaving helpful answers on Quora
- Facebook groups
- Creating videos on YouTube
- Pinterest, etc.
In the game of traffic, understand that it is a sport and everyone is aiming at being a winner. Another blogger is pursuing the visitor you’re striving to bring in. Do you get the gist? Competition!
To win in this battle, you need to understand that there will be winners and losers at the end of the day.
To win this insane battle, you need to be freaking good, a badass blogger. Lastly, you need to know your opponents and diverse ways to have your share of that pie.
You might not be able to beat them, but you can steal a share.
One of the major mistakes new bloggers make is to think they can play on every platform. They are active on Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, Pinterest, etc.
If you’re a sole blogger, then that is draining. Experiment with some of the platforms and stick to one or two that brings in results the most.
Your niche will also help determine your playground. Facebook, for example, is best for witty posts, pets, parenting, and health.
These are topics that people on your list are talking about every day. But when it comes to educational articles like this one, people prefer to use Google.
Because of that, I tend to focus mainly on SEO as my traffic playground.
4. Build An Email List
I don’t know if I am the only one, but setting up an email on my blog is often draining. It looks so complicated and insane.
But no matter how bad or technical it sounds, you must not joke with email marketing. Top players in the industry, like Neil Patel, use an email list to promote a content he is yet to produce.
By so doing, he creates anticipation.
Think about this: what if you wake up one morning and both social media and Google stop existing.
Would you be able to drive traffic and make money blogging? If that happens, there is no doubt that many bloggers would be out of business.
That is because they are too dull when it comes to collecting emails.
There are many strategies you can use to collect emails, and one of them is:
- Offer a free product in return
- Deliver amazing contents
- Ask them to subscribe
There are probably numerous other tips, but the above suggestions work wonders.
I discovered that offering a free digital product in return for their emails works magic. I used this technique in one of my blogs, and the result was crazy.
Another way to go about this is through popups. I know what you’re thinking – that popups are annoying.
Well, I agree with you. But look at it this way; the chances of your visitors returning to your blog are almost zero.
If you believe you can help them through your quality content, then a popup is the price to pay.
If you also want to make money blogging, having a massive email list is one of the routes to achieve that.
Imagine you have 10,000 subscribers, and each of them worth $1. If you play your ball well, you will be making $10,000 every month.
Making money blogging is easy if only you set the mechanism in place.
Not collecting emails from your subscribers is a sin and unethical. Be pushy and ensure you always get their emails.
If your contents are kings, they will count it as a small price to pay. But when your resources are mediocre, they would even backlist your blog for being too pushy.
5. Start Affiliate Marketing
One of the significant ways to make money blogging is through affiliate marketing. If you’re in a lucrative niche, this source of income might be your top source.
If you have an email list, and traffic, you will be able to pull this off.
Another mistake bloggers make is to develop a course and start selling.
By the end of the day, they sell nothing. It is depressing, which is why it is better to indulge in affiliate marketing.
By doing so, you’re able to learn what your audience wants to buy, then create a product that solves that need.
In other words, you’re using affiliate marketing as a learning ground and also making money in the process.
At the time of writing this article, I am yet to monetize Bloghomies. That doesn’t make me a novice, as I have implemented these techniques in my other platforms.
If you can discover what your readers want, making money through them becomes easy peasy. That leads us to – creating a unique product.
6. Create Your Unique Product
After experimenting with affiliate marketing, you will no doubt understand the needs of your readers and how to solve them.
Depending on your niche, your readers are asking questions, and they are looking for a solution.
Creating a profound answer to their problems is the first key to make money blogging.
I created an eBook two years ago, on how one can make money as a freelance writer. Since the majority of my blog readers were people looking for a way to attain financial freedom, they ordered the eBook as if it’s a limited edition.
I made more than I have ever made from AdSense through that product.
Do I need to tell you that it wasn’t easy creating that product? Writing 30,000 words eBook, coupled with charts and images, wasn’t easy.
The overall format of the eBook was draining, but I did it!
It wasn’t a rosy experience. But I paid the price, and the rewards came crashing at me.
When it comes to creating a product, have in mind that it won’t be easy. It is not in my nature to give my readers high hopes, because that is often the beginning of failure.
By hitting the issue on the head, they can prepare themselves.
If you understand your niche well, and the biggest problem your readers are having, you will get an idea and how to solve that problem.
With this knowledge, making money becomes more effortless. Before creating any product for my readers, I always ask myself.
- Will I be able to buy this product if I was a reader?
- Can this product solve their need?
- How much would they be able to afford?
The more question you can ask regarding your proposed product, the better you will be able to market it, and lastly, make money blogging.
Apart from making money through your product, you establish yourself as an authority that your target readers will learn to trust.
7. Ad Placement
There are numerous ad networks that you can leverage on, and the most popular among bloggers is Google AdSense.
However, you will not make a dime from Google AdSense if your traffic isn’t yet impressive. Should that stop you from applying?
Well, you are in a better position to answer.
In one of my niche blogs, I make approximately $10 or a little more for every 1000 pageviews.
What determines how much you earn from this ad program is usually the location of your readers, the ad’s PPC, and your niche.
I discovered that clicks from America, Canada, and Australia tend to earn more, compared to clicks from India, Nigeria, etc.
Aside from Google AdSense, there are numerous other ad networks that you can use to monetize your blog, like:
- Propeller Ads
- AdThrive, etc.
But if you can fully harness the full potential of your blog, you won’t find these ad networks attractive since most of them ends up taking your readers away.
But if you’re starting, the earnings from these ad networks would keep you going. There is a common practice i wish to correct, and that is placing ads almost on every paragraph of you post.
If you want to make money blogging in Nigeria, you need to desist from that.
8. Sell Your Skills
You can offer free consultancy to your readers, and you can also do it for them for some bucks. Brian
Dean of Backlinko.com often gives consultancy services to businesses, helping them rank higher on search engines.
These businesses consult him; they give him gigs and pay him at the end of the day.
Through your blog, you should be able to market your skills. Perhaps you’re a fantastic freelance writer, graphic designer, or programmer, etc.
Depending on your niche, you can sell your expertise and make money blogging in Nigeria.
I often see blogging as a door to opportunities.
About 98% of gigs I’ve gotten as a freelance writer and web designer came through my blogs.
However, you need to be good at what you do for your readers to trust you enough to give you gigs.
You can’t use mediocre images on your blog posts and expect a reader to give you a graphic design job.
Neither would they want you to write for them if your blog posts are an eyesore and painstaking to read.
9. Organize A Workshop
Depending on your niche, you can organize seminars and make mad money from your blog.
The fact is, it is one of the top revenue generations our so-called top professional bloggers use. But this monetizing strategy is best when you’ve built a community.
Don’t get me wrong; you don’t need to have massive blog readers. A few loyal readers are what you need.
You can decide to teach them some home improvement tips, in the form of a workshop.
Perhaps you can show them the art of writing and how to make money through such a skill. The list is endless!
The trick is tailoring your workshop to your niche.
Are you running a music blog, then organize a workshop on how they can make their music go viral. If you’re running a real estate blog, then seminars on real estate business will work. You get the drill, right?
There are numerous ways to make money blogging in Nigeria. If I am to list them all, I doubt if this page would be enough.
During my research, I discovered some frequently asked questions regarding making money through blogging. I would love to answer them in the next section.
